Medicare - MBI Number Look Up

  • MBI number is the new identification number provided to Medicare beneficiaries.
  • It is a replacement for HICN (Health Insurance Claim Number).
  • MBI has 11 characters in an alpha-numeric format which has the same length as HICN but does not include SSN.
  • Medicare started to provide new cards to its members from April 2018.
  • Effective January 1, 2020, it is necessary to bill the claim with the MBI number. Medicare will reject the claim if the claim is billed with HICN.
  • MBI numbers can be obtained through the Medicare web portal using the "MBI Look Up" tool.
  • When searching for an MBI number, it is necessary to have the patient's last name, patient's first name, DOB, and SSN, or else an MBI number cannot be obtained.
  • If anyone information is missing then the MBI number cannot be obtained and will need to contact the patient.
